“Many men are in a state of massive despair because they have forgotten their future – their inheritance, their calling, their horizon. They only see the present and the bleakness of the present seeps into their hearts, the shadow of despair robs life of its possibilities.” Jon Tyson in Fighting Shadows.  

This week we will discuss what it takes to fight successfully against the shadow of despair. We will learn from King David about how he fought against his despair while living in a cave. (Psalm 57) Biographies like David’s provide wisdom and encouragement in our own battles against despair. 

I have found the life and ministry of Adoniram Judson to be very powerful and especially helpful in fighting against despair. His story is told in the book To the Golden Shore. However, I suggest that you listen to John Piper’s presentation of Judson’s life first. It is an all-time favorite of mine. Enjoy and be encouraged!
